“This 6 AMA PRA CATEGORY 1 CREDITS approved course by SUNY- Downstate College of Medicine is a highly educational and rewarding seminar for practicing physicians interested in helping their patients stay healthy by creating hormone balance” said Cheryl Perlis, MD a gynecologist from Chicago who participated in the January 28 seminar.

The mini course is a highly sought after intensive one-day practitioner education opportunity that covers the clinical application of BHRT, insurance issues, testing, diagnosis, clinical protocols for men and women, dosage titration and extensive review of case studies.

      By Maryanne MacLeod
Macomb Daily Staff Writer

And the list of differences between the way heart disease manifests in men and women keeps growing.

While heart disease is the No. 1 killer of men and women in the United States, more women now die of the disease than men, according to Henry Ford Macomb cardiologist Lalitha Rudraiah, M.D.

Before menopause, she explained, women have a lesser risk of heart attack than men in that age category. Afterward, their risk exceeds that of men.

Women are also more likely than men to die of their first heart attack. While 42 percent of men die of their first attack, 52 percent of women do, said cardiologist Ramin Manshadi, M.D., author of “The Wisdom of Heart Health: Attaining a Healthy and Robust Heart in Today's Modern World.”

A new study shows that heart attack risk increases 3.5 times for women who've experienced stillbirth, compared to those who have not. Similarly, those who have experienced more than three spontaneous miscarriages are five times more likely to have a heart attack than women who have not, Manshadi said.

“Women have a very atypical presentation of heart disease,” explained Rudraiah, who will be the keynote speaker Feb. 4 at Henry Ford Macomb's “The Way to a Woman's Heart” event. Fee is $15 for the 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. program, which includes lunch and an optional exercise session from to 1:30 p.m. Advance registration is requested by calling 800-532-2411.

According to Rudraiah, the key to prevention is early diagnosis, which includes knowing our numbers, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI includes knowing one’s numbers – such as blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI and blood glucose (diabetes) levels — and addressing them.

“Although smoking is not a number per se,” Rudraiah said, “we need to be aware that it is a serious risk factor.

“Overall, simple lack of awareness is the biggest problem. Women don't go to the doctor, they don't follow up on their numbers, which leads to the absence of a diagnosis and treatment,” Rudraiah said. “There is even a lack of awareness in the medical community.”

If that isn't enough, heart disease is more difficult to detect in women, Rudraih said. Continued…

“For example, they experience a lot of false negatives on stress tests. We don't know why,” she said. “Also (men with heart disease exhibit with stereotypical major) blockage. Women have diffused blockage. It doesn't limit the (blood) flow, but still causes chest pain.”

In addition, men with heart disease exhibit the typical symptoms with exertion: chest pain, excess perspiration and pain radiating from their chest down the left arm or to the jaw. Women may just feel fatigued, or experience pain in their upper abdomen and back, feel nauseous or short of breath.

Another factor that magnifies the situation for women is obesity. Although this trend affects both women and men, women are at greater risk, because, according to Manshadi, two-thirds of females in the U.S. are considered obese.

Obesity is a risk factor for both heart disease and diabetes.

And women are generally deficient in Vitamin D, according to statistics. New research indicates that vitamin D deficiency in young women is linked to elevated risks of high blood pressure in midlife, Manshadi said. In addition, deficient pre-menopausal women were three times more likely to have systolic hypertension 15 years later.

More about women’s health will be included at the Henry Ford Macomb event on Feb. 4. Among the other discussion topics:

      Sleep and heart health

Sleep medicine specialist Joseph Mardelli, M.D., will discuss how a restful night's sleep benefits the heart, as well as mood and overall health. He will outline various sleep disorders and also offer tips on how to get a good night's sleep.

      Emotional health

The heart and the head are aligned more than we may think. A Henry Ford Macomb Behavioral Health expert will discuss how stress management and other ways of improving our emotional health can have a positive impact on heart health. Continued…

Color your way to a healthy diet

A colorful plate is a healthy plate. A Henry Ford Macomb Center for Weight Management health educator will talk about the benefits of eating a phytonutrient-rich diet and how to incorporate antioxidants in many delicious options. Healthy samples will be provided.

      Hormones: A balancing act

Hot flashes, night sweats, trouble sleeping and weight gain are some of the most common symptoms of hormonal imbalances as a woman ages. Reproductive endocrinologist Charla Blacker, M.D., will explore the causes and available treatments for hormone imbalances.

For required reservations and more information, call 800-532-2411 or log on to HenryFordMacomb.com/hvi.
