<p>    By now, you&#039;ve probably heard that it&#039;s best to cut out white    foods to increase the nutrition in your diet and help you lose    weight. Products made with white sugar and flour typically    don&#039;t contribute much in the way of healthy calories and should    be limited. Does that mean all white foods are bad? Not at all.    Eat a variety from this white food list and you&#039;ll easily boost    the nutrition in your daily diet.  </p>
<p>    Cauliflower  </p>
<p>    Hands-down, cauliflower is my favorite white food. A member of    the crucifer family, cauliflower is a potent cancer-fighter, is    high in fiber, vitamin C and B-vitamins. Think you don&#039;t like    cauliflower? Toss it with a little olive oil, salt &amp;    pepper; then roast at 400° until browned and tender. Your house    will smell like French fries as it&#039;s cooking.  </p>
<p>    White Onions  </p>
<p>    Another favorite vegetable, onions add zing to any dish. They    are terrific inflammation and cancer-fighters. Saute one or two    sliced onions the next time you cook and add them to sandwiches    and salads.  </p>
<p>    Mushrooms  </p>
<p>    Mushrooms are high in selenium, a mineral needed to produce    antioxidants; as well as iron and zinc. Many are considered    anti-inflammatory as well. Eat from the wide variety available,    including crimini, portabello, shiitake, white, porcini, enoki.    Sauteed mushrooms add a meaty texture, making them a terrific    addition to your meatless meals. Macadamia Nuts  </p>
<p>    Nuts are a fantastic snack. High in protein, and especially    healthy fat; they keep you going between meals. Macadamia nuts    are high in the mono-unsaturated fats that we want in our    diets, especially to keep our hearts healthy. Make up snack    baggies with ¼ cup portions to grab on the run.  </p>
<p>    White Beans  </p>
<p>    White beans beat out animal protein when it comes to being high    in fiber and very low in fat. They&#039;re like an empty canvas &#8211;    what you can do with them is only limited by your imagination.    Toss with finely chopped veggies and fresh lemon juice for a    yummy salad. Whiz up in the food processor with olive oil,    garlic &amp; parsley for a sandwich spread. Toss with sauteed    onions and garlic, season with a little white vinegar and hot    sauce and make a burrito with a high-fiber wrap and a slice of    cheese.  </p>
<p>    Cream of Wheat  </p>
<p>    No, not the chocolate or cinnabon variety. Try the Healthy    Grain Instant Original version which is high in protein, fiber,    iron and calcium. It will fill your tummy with warm, whole    grain goodness and takes nearly no time to make.  </p>
<p>    Horseradish  </p>

Substantially elevated blood D-lactate (DLA) concentrations are associated with neurocardiac toxicity in humans and animals. The neurological symptoms are similar to inherited or acquired abnormalities of pyruvate metabolism. We hypothesized that DLA interferes with mitochondrial utilization of L-lactate and pyruvate in brain and heart.<br />
Methods:<br />
Respiration rates in rat brain, heart and liver mitochondria were measured using DLA, LLA and pyruvate independently and in combination.<br />
Results:<br />
In brain mitochondria, state 3 respiration was 53% and 75% lower with DLA as substrate when compared with LLA and pyruvate, respectively (p&lt;0.05). Similarly in heart mitochondria, state 3 respiration was 39% and 86% lower with DLA as substrate when compared with LLA or pyruvate, respectively (p&lt;0.05). However, state 3 respiration rates were similar between DLA, LLA and pyruvate in liver mitochondria. Combined incubation of DLA with LLA or pyruvate markedly impaired state 3 respiration rates in brain and heart mitochondria (p&lt;0.05) but not in liver mitochondria. DLA dehydrogenase activities were 61% and 51% lower in brain and heart mitochondria compared to liver, respectively, whereas LLA dehydrogenase activities were similar across all three tissues.  An LDH inhibitor blocked state 3 respiration with LLA as substrate in all three tissues. A monocarboxylate transporter inhibitor blocked respiration with all three substrates.<br />
Conclusions:<br />
DLA was a poor respiratory substrate in brain and heart mitochondria and inhibited LLA and pyruvate usage in these tissues. The nutritional management has become complex to optimize PKU patients&#8217; growth, development and diet compliance. This paper review critically new advances and challenges  that have recently focused attention on  potential relevant of LCPUFA supplementation, progress in protein substitutes and new protein sources, large neutral amino acids  and sapropterin.  Given the functional effects, DHA is conditionally essential substrates that should be supplied with PKU diet in infancy but even beyond. An European Commission Programme is going on to establish quantitative DHA requirements in this population. Improvements in the palatability, presentation, convenience and nutritional composition of protein substitutes have helped to improve long-term compliance with PKU diet, although it can be expected for further improvement in this area. Glycomacropeptide, a new protein source,  may help to support dietary compliance  of PKU subject but further studies are needed to evaluate this metabolic and nutritional issues. The PKU diet is difficult to maintain in adolescence and adult life. Treatment with large neutral amino acids or sapropterin  in selected cases can be helpful. However, more studies are necessary to investigate the potential role, dose, and composition of large neutral amino acids  in PKU treatment and to show long-term efficacy and tolerance. Ideally treatment with sapropterin would lead to acceptable blood Phe control without dietary treatment but this is uncommon and sapropterin will usually be given in combination with dietary treatment, but clinical protocol evaluating  adjustment of PKU diet and sapropterin dosage are needed.In conclusion PKU diet and the new existing treatments, that need to be optimized, may be a complete and combined  strategy  possibly positive impacting on the psychological, social, and neurocognitive life of PKU patients.Source:<br /><a href="http://www.nutritionandmetabolism.com/rss/">http://www.nutritionandmetabolism.com/rss/</a></p>

Dietary fibers have been proposed to play a role in cardiovascular risk as well as body weight management. Flaxseeds are a good source of dietary fibers, and a large proportion of these are water-soluble viscous fibers.MethodHere, we examine the effect of flaxseed dietary fibers in different food matrices on blood lipids and fecal excretion of fat and energy in a double-blind randomized crossover study with 17 subjects. Three different 7-d diets were tested: a low-fiber control diet (Control), a diet with flaxseed fiber drink (3/day) (Flax drink), and a diet with flaxseed fiber bread (3/day) (Flax bread). Total fat and energy excretion was measured in feces, blood samples were collected before and after each period, and appetite sensation registered 3 times daily before main meals.<br />
Results:<br />
Compared to control, Flax drink lowered fasting total-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol by 12 and 15%, respectively, (p&lt;0.01), whereas Flax bread only produced a reduction of 7 and 9%, respectively (p&lt;0.05). Fecal fat and energy excretion increased by 50 and 23% with Flax drink consumption compared to control (p&lt;0.05), but only fecal fat excretion was increased with Flax bread compared to control (p&lt;0.05).<br />
Conclusion:<br />
Both Flax drink and Flax bread resulted in decreased plasma total and LDL-cholesterol and increased fat excretion, but the food matrix and/or processing may be of importance. <p>    The second class in a six-month nutrition series meant to    educate the public on healthier eating habits will be held at    Memorial Elementary School at 7 p.m. Monday night.  </p>
<p>    Upton dietician Susan Onffroy, of Juniper Road, is teaching the    course in partnership with the Upton Recreation Commission in    the hope that residents will make better nutrition choices.  </p>
<p>    “Moderation seems to be the biggest problem in the United    States. Two out of three people are overweight, and about half    the people in the U.S. are obese. It is mainly because people    are eating too much, and not exercising enough,” she said.  </p>
<p>    That is why Monday night’s class will revolve around portion    control, Onffroy said.  </p>
<p>    To help her students understand just how much is too much,    Onffroy will bring fake food to the class to demonstrate    correct portion sizes.  </p>
<p>    “When I show them how much is too much, they are usually    shocked,” she said.  </p>
<p>    Onffroy attributes the nation’s misunderstanding of correct    food portions to the American mentality that “bigger is    better.”  </p>
<p>    “People always want more for their money. They demand it. When    high end restaurants serve the correct portions, people get mad    and think ‘that’s all I get?’ A lot of people have this    instinct that they have to eat everything that is on their    plate. I’m trying to let them know that it is OK to bring food    home when you eat out,” she said.  </p>
<p>    Upton Recreation Commission Chairman Richard Gazoorian said the    nutrition course compliments other health-oriented programs.  </p>
<p>    “We’ve expanded the offerings for the residents with many    different things over last couple of years, like Zumba and    other activities to get people healthy. A part of that we felt    was very important was the nutritional aspect – getting people    to understand the right foods to eat in order to live a healthy    lifestyle,” he said.  </p>
<p>    The course kicked off on Jan. 9, and will run until June.    Recreation Director Mary Cortese said that if the course is    successful, it may continue in the fall.  </p>
<p>    Classes are held the first Monday of each month in room 114 at    Memorial Elementary School at 69 Main St. It costs $10 per    class.  </p>
<p>    No registration is required, however students must sign a    liability waiver, which can be found on the Recreation    Commission’s website, http://www.upton.ma.us/pages/recreation-commission.php.  </p>
