Official: Mall walkers inspiration for health and fitness show

Participants of all ages, fitness and health levels, and exhibitors were at Arrowhead Mall on Saturday to be a part of the Be Active Health Show.

“The main inspirations behind this event are the walkers who walk around the mall every morning,” said Hope Margarit, mall marketing director.

“All kinds of people from teens, to mothers who walk with strollers to senior adults, come in at 7 a.m. and walk before work. We do a lot of healthy things at the mall, and this is just another aspect of it,” Margarit said.

The event consisted of 11 businesses from Muskogee and surrounding cities. Free fitness classes were provided by Champion Fitness, and speakers offered information about healthy living. The 11 businesses represented at the health show were Muskogee Regional Medical Center, Tahlequah City Hospital, Muskogee Swim and Fitness, Humana, Pregnancy Resource Center, Professional Home Hospice, Gaddy Drug, Cardiology Clinic of Muskogee, America Red Cross and Dillard’s hosted an American Heart Association Wear Red Fashion display.

“This is a regional mall, so we’re taking a regional approach and inviting businesses from around here,” Margarit said.

“We don’t have very many things like this around here, so it’s great that people can get out there and see what’s available to them without having to go to all the way to Tulsa,” said Susan Winters, a partaker who attended the health show.

Both Champion Fitness and the Muskogee Swim and Fitness Center were represented and were dedicated to helping area residents learn about setting and reaching fitness goals.

Champion Fitness offered free fitness classes and routine demonstrations for cardio kickboxing and step aerobics routines.

“We have fitness classes for any fitness level, and our classes are great for cardiology health, weight loss, toning, and they are great for relieving stress,” said Group Fitness Director Shannon George.

We’re here to show people how we can help them. We have a variety of different levels and instructors who are certified to help any person of any fitness level. We also have swimming lessons, water aerobics for people who may need exercise with less pressure on their joints, but still want a great cardio workout, said a representative of Muskogee Swim and Fitness.

Each business had something unique to offer, but they all had something in common. They were all there to give their support and information on all they have to offer to help serve the community.

“For us, it’s a chance to meet patients and potential patients. We get to educate the community about being healthy. We’re a regional provider, so we love to get out and meet the community that we serve. Civic involvement is a large part of what we do,” said Christina Deidesheimer, MRMC’s director of Marketing and Communications.

Becky Elliott, the infection prevention specialist at MRMC said many of the people they are seeing, they have seen at similar free events.

“They don’t have insurance and they wouldn’t have been able to get these screenings if wasn’t for this health show,” Elliott said.

Hamilton students learn about exercise, movement and meditation on a healthy-living field trip

As an English teacher in the Hamilton Township School District, Lisa Cesaro-Shaltis is concerned about ABC’s. However, she also worries about F’s — food, fitness and fun.

A former multi-sport athlete at Steinert High School and Trenton State College, Cesaro-Shaltis has long recognized the need for a healthy lifestyle. But she’s concerned many American youths have fallen off the fitness trail and it is affecting them in all facets of their lives, including the classroom, and she has begun to take steps to get them on the right path.

With help from Whole Foods Market in West Windsor and the PEAC Health & Fitness in Ewing, Cesaro-Shaltis took 66 Crockett Middle School pupils on a field trip recently that was devoted to movement, meditation and nutrition as keys to lifelong success.

The day was a big hit with the middle-schoolers, including Trinity Barcless. “I really liked it,” said the seventh-grader. “I feel a lot stronger. It’s like a whole side of me opened up. I learned a lot.”

Barcless, who says her yearly activities include hockey and soccer, especially enjoyed the agility portion of the exercise segment at PEAC as well as the healthy foods tasting, most notably the strawberry salsa. “Normally we have canned dips but that’s one (recipe) I’m going to make,” she said.

A “straight-A” student, Barcless dreams of a future in the athletic arena or she might want to be a pediatrician.

However, the lessons learned on the field trip were especially important for the more sedentary students.

“I’m an old Phys-Ed teacher,” said Crockett principal Roger Bigos, who approved the teacher’s request and accompanied the middle-schoolers on the outing. “(Cesaro-Shaltis) is in it to stimulate their brains. You eat the right things and you do the right things and it should be a lifelong thing. The obesity rate today is awful. It is unreal how heavy kids are today.

“Team sports aren’t for everybody. The athletes already get it; it’s the other kids we’ve got to reach.”

The 13-year-olds, of varying size and athletic ability, were inquisitive and engaged at the store and the fitness facility.

“We stayed mostly in the produce, fish and whole grains area,” Cesaro-Shaltis said of the Whole Foods tour. “They loved it. There were so many questions.”

Laura Geltch of the PEAC marketing department agrees it’s a giant step in the right direction to get people to realize good food tastes good and exercise can be enjoyable.

“We should have a whole generation addicted to fitness,” Geltch said. “(We) want to demystify fitness and exercise for them.”

It was an “A” day for teachers and pupils alike.

“I learned about exercise and how to eat better and be healthier and that’s important,” said seventh-grader Jordan Burnett.

Bigos, Cesaro-Shaltis and the staffs at Whole Foods and PEAC were energized by the day, too.

“The resources are out there,” Cesaro-Shaltis said. “People are willing to help. You just have to find it.”

“We’ve done this before, of no cost to the school,” Geltch said. “We’re happy to provide it. Any local-area schools can contact us. It’s fun.”

The field trip comes highly recommended.

“It’s a very good day and it’s helping me out a lot,” said seventh-grader Wyatt Rue. “It’s about making good healthy choices.” It reinforces some things the students have already been told.

“My mom has been telling me to start exercising,” said Rue, who participates in karate and plans to own a restaurant someday. “I’m going to do it.”

“This is the first generation that (experts predict) will not outlive their parents’ age,” Cesaro-Shaltis said. “I believe you have to move to improve, and in ‘strong bodies — strong minds.’

“I’ve got to keep them moving. Moving and learning happens best at the same time, and wellness is central to the whole process.”

Flaxseed dietary fibers lower cholesterol and increase fecal fat excretion, but magnitude of effect depend on food type

Background:
Dietary fibers have been proposed to play a role in cardiovascular risk as well as body weight management. Flaxseeds are a good source of dietary fibers, and a large proportion of these are water-soluble viscous fibers.MethodHere, we examine the effect of flaxseed dietary fibers in different food matrices on blood lipids and fecal excretion of fat and energy in a double-blind randomized crossover study with 17 subjects. Three different 7-d diets were tested: a low-fiber control diet (Control), a diet with flaxseed fiber drink (3/day) (Flax drink), and a diet with flaxseed fiber bread (3/day) (Flax bread). Total fat and energy excretion was measured in feces, blood samples were collected before and after each period, and appetite sensation registered 3 times daily before main meals.
Results:
Compared to control, Flax drink lowered fasting total-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol by 12 and 15%, respectively, (p<0.01), whereas Flax bread only produced a reduction of 7 and 9%, respectively (p<0.05). Fecal fat and energy excretion increased by 50 and 23% with Flax drink consumption compared to control (p<0.05), but only fecal fat excretion was increased with Flax bread compared to control (p<0.05).
Conclusion:
Both Flax drink and Flax bread resulted in decreased plasma total and LDL-cholesterol and increased fat excretion, but the food matrix and/or processing may be of importance. Viscous flaxseed dietary fibers may be a useful tool for lowering blood cholesterol and potentially play a role in energy balance.Trial registration: The study was registered in the clinicaltrials.gov database: NCT00953004.Source:

Phenylketonuria: nutritional advances and challenges

Despite the appearance of new treatment, dietary approach remains the mainstay of PKU therapy. The nutritional management has become complex to optimize PKU patients’ growth, development and diet compliance. This paper review critically new advances and challenges that have recently focused attention on potential relevant of LCPUFA supplementation, progress in protein substitutes and new protein sources, large neutral amino acids and sapropterin. Given the functional effects, DHA is conditionally essential substrates that should be supplied with PKU diet in infancy but even beyond. An European Commission Programme is going on to establish quantitative DHA requirements in this population. Improvements in the palatability, presentation, convenience and nutritional composition of protein substitutes have helped to improve long-term compliance with PKU diet, although it can be expected for further improvement in this area. Glycomacropeptide, a new protein source, may help to support dietary compliance of PKU subject but further studies are needed to evaluate this metabolic and nutritional issues. The PKU diet is difficult to maintain in adolescence and adult life. Treatment with large neutral amino acids or sapropterin in selected cases can be helpful. However, more studies are necessary to investigate the potential role, dose, and composition of large neutral amino acids in PKU treatment and to show long-term efficacy and tolerance. Ideally treatment with sapropterin would lead to acceptable blood Phe control without dietary treatment but this is uncommon and sapropterin will usually be given in combination with dietary treatment, but clinical protocol evaluating adjustment of PKU diet and sapropterin dosage are needed. In conclusion PKU diet and the new existing treatments, that need to be optimized, may be a complete and combined strategy possibly positive impacting on the psychological, social, and neurocognitive life of PKU patients.Source:

D-Lactate Altered Mitochondrial Energy Production in Rat Brain and Heart but not Liver

Background:
Substantially elevated blood D-lactate (DLA) concentrations are associated with neurocardiac toxicity in humans and animals. The neurological symptoms are similar to inherited or acquired abnormalities of pyruvate metabolism. We hypothesized that DLA interferes with mitochondrial utilization of L-lactate and pyruvate in brain and heart.
Methods:
Respiration rates in rat brain, heart and liver mitochondria were measured using DLA, LLA and pyruvate independently and in combination.
Results:
In brain mitochondria, state 3 respiration was 53% and 75% lower with DLA as substrate when compared with LLA and pyruvate, respectively (p<0.05). Similarly in heart mitochondria, state 3 respiration was 39% and 86% lower with DLA as substrate when compared with LLA or pyruvate, respectively (p<0.05). However, state 3 respiration rates were similar between DLA, LLA and pyruvate in liver mitochondria. Combined incubation of DLA with LLA or pyruvate markedly impaired state 3 respiration rates in brain and heart mitochondria (p<0.05) but not in liver mitochondria. DLA dehydrogenase activities were 61% and 51% lower in brain and heart mitochondria compared to liver, respectively, whereas LLA dehydrogenase activities were similar across all three tissues. An LDH inhibitor blocked state 3 respiration with LLA as substrate in all three tissues. A monocarboxylate transporter inhibitor blocked respiration with all three substrates.
Conclusions:
DLA was a poor respiratory substrate in brain and heart mitochondria and inhibited LLA and pyruvate usage in these tissues. Further studies are warranted to evaluate whether these findings support, in part, the possible neurological and cardiac toxicity caused by high DLA levels.Source:
